So what is the girl whose mom has been obsessed with her learning about 5 jobs a day since she was two going to do after high school?
If you have followed me for 10+ years, you will remember how when Mia was 5, she wanted to be a vet, and I got her the Hug and Heal Barbie puppy, gutted it, filled it with bloody slime, and sutured it up while I explained euthanasia. When she was 8 and wanted to be an archaeologist, I took her to the hills of Bakersfield to hunt for shark teeth, but on a day I purposely knew it would be 100 degrees. Why? Because when we skirt the truth, we leave teens going off to college ill-prepared, and when they fail, they have no backup plan. Was it extreme? Yeah, a lot of my tactics are, but were my intentions good? Absolutely.
About a month ago, my daughter had a major epiphany, and today she graduates high school with plans clearer than most, even if they displease or confuse most people who inquire. Her epiphany was around what’s first, not what’s next, and taking classes, workshops, and training around the skills she wants on her resume. You see, I taught Mia to always say when I grow up, I can work WITH Broadway, while our world demands seniors to choose a single path, a career title, and an end goal.
I love her shift to what’s first and can’t wait to see the countless jobs, gigs, and creative endeavors she pursues now and in the future. When you choose WITH, the possibilities are endless, and this is the true meaning of my work at Career Vision.
So don’t worry about Mia if she doesn’t fit into a nice, neat checkmark for what’s next… this girl’s gonna be just fine because she can’t wait to get started on what’s first. Hear Mia firsthand in this speech she made at her theater banquet last week… I love this girl and could not be prouder of her maturity and her confidence as she embraces all life has to offer her today and always.
