When I see someone who is dissatisfied with their job, chances are, they are having work allergies and don’t even know it. Today’s downloadable resource is a great starting point to identify work allergies.

My kids childhood has been full or work allergy testing to further identify areas they want to build immunity in and areas are like anaphylaxis. Even as I continue to refine my own work, I know my work allergies VERY well, but at times, some are inevitable and cause severe anaphylaxis that can wreck havoc in every area of by body and mind. That’s a whole other post, so let me give a different example.

The pharmacist who rolls his eyes, mumbles, only responds to questions with yes or no, and seems to enjoy asserting their power of saying I have to come back in four hours when I have a sick kid in the car with a fever hacking up a lung and I know the medication is prepackaged, and if he wanted to, could help me out and grab that z-pack.

Did this pharmacist consciously choose a job that placed him working with sick and cranky people?

Did he consciously choose a job that required him to stand all day?

Did he consciously choose a job where he had to work in retail and run a cash register and provide customer service?

Did he consciously choose a job where he had to deal with insurance and people angry when insurance does not cover things?

Did he consciously choose a job where he has a scheduled lunch from 1-2?

Did he concisely a job where he had to keep up on every new drug on the market?

Not sure…..but a lot of teens I know who choose pharmacy choose it for the pay and because they want to do something in the medical field but don’t really love blood. While there are many other careers related to pharmacy other than working in retail, the vast majority of them do.

While I totally respect families that go all in on IB, AP, SAT paths during high school to get to college and career, I do think it is important to save some time for meaningful part time jobs, volunteering, entrepreneurship, or clubs to test out some very important work allergies. Key word- meaningful.
