The times I've volunteered at the Rose Parade, I went with my friend and my mom.

First year, we glued dried coconut to the underside of a float. If you like climbing, you can be someone who climbs scaffolding to decorate higher/harder to reach areas.

Second year we stripped leaves of of stems of silverleaf. Then we got to glue them to a couple metal sheets. If you like doing idle tasks, chores like sweeping and handing out supplies, and organizing, it's super fun.

If you like painting, catch volunteer slots early and you can paint the floats. Get experience or connections and you can "upgrade" to handling the whole flowers. I was jealous of the people who got their own little cars and bees to decorate!
