I must have made this for a private university I used to present at — for their Nursing Program.

Hope it shows just how much we don’t know exists, even when it comes to a standard major like nursing.

A Burn Center & a Firefighter’s Second Act

I remember when I was at that university, there was an adult student who had had a decorated career as a firefighter.

She was injured and no longer able to serve the community in that capacity, so she came back for a second career — as a nurse.

She had never even considered working as a nurse in a burn center — until I shared this PowerPoint.

It brought tears to her eyes — finally a way to use both expertises.
To me, it was obvious...
But I guess that’s because I’ve been doing this for 20 years.

Rethinking What It Means to “Become a Nurse”

I also had a student who developed a chronic medical condition during undergrad.

It made it virtually impossible for her to physically be a nurse —
even though she was the top-ranked student in the program
and had scored the highest on the nursing exams they had ever seen.

Instead of giving up, she:

• Started tutoring other students

• Found her voice in test prep materials

• Built a career helping future nurses succeed
