Yesterday was decision day and so many high schools were celebrating students who have committed to four-year universities. Those students who have chosen community college, trade schools, entrepreneurship, apprenticeship, the workforce, a mission, or the military are often left out of decision day. And then there’s the student who has absolutely no idea how to answer the question “what are you doing after graduation?” It kinda makes teens choose something random just to get people off their backs if I am being honest.

This post is for those high schoolers and/or their parents who are feeling like they can’t even celebrate the diploma because there’s so much focus on what’s next.

First and foremost, it’s OK to be in the here and now to realize that one chapter is closing but you don’t have to start reading the next chapter or even checking out the next book immediately. You have 40-plus years of work ahead of you so don’t feel the need to commit while running… pausing and being deliberate may be best.

Secondly, as much as everyone would like you to believe they have their entire life mapped out, the vast majority of them will change their plans by December. Trust me on this. It’s a pattern I have seen the past 20 years over and over and over. So if you can start to realize that, it might help you slow down and take your time.

They are often hard to find for a few reasons. One reason is that many companies can only hire remotely in their own state or states with similar employment laws as them. Some Companies hire in states with lowest minimum wage if they are able to. Always check states eligible when applying. Even if the job doesn’t hire remotely in their state check for companies in a similar field as they may. Also many companies use temp agencies or hiring agencies to fill their roles.

I am seeing soooooo many college students and college grads having a hard time finding a “career job” who need income asap and are applying to a job any job; like target cashier. Yes the economy sucks and jobs are hard to find but they are still there people just don’t know how to find them or write a resume or apply in ways to make employers take notice. Prior to COVID I spent 5 years teaching employment boot camps in libraries up and down California through grants I wrote so I think it’s time for me to get back to some of that work and bring it to social media and substack. Kulotta loves Highland Cows, butterflies, family, non-traditional education, coloring, and her faith. Here are some ideas for Kulotta to check out in their home state of Florida as they think about what they can do from home as a stay-at-home mom, or even if they decide to move to a Southeastern state in the Sun Belt and work full time. They have previously been a special education teacher and school counselor..

Life Skills Instructor

Even without Kulotta’s background in special education and school counseling, there is a great need for people to become vendors and service providers with their state and county offices that provide services for children and adults with disabilities.

Kulotta can casually seek to become a respite provider for a family with children and provide care for their children in their home while they rest or catch up on things around the house. They can also take children or people with disabilities out into the community as a personal assistant or social recreation aide.

Kulotta can also become a vendor or service provider to teach classes in literacy, life skills, and more for those who have disabilities and get paid through APD, for example, which is the state organization for people with disabilities in Florida where Kulotta lives. Here is an example of the application process.

APD

Kulotta loves non-traditional education that focuses on each child’s interests and learning style, so this could be a perfect way to work with students individually or in a group setting on her own terms around her kids’ schedules while providing needed services.

She could even host farm days for socialization and life skills, work skills around Highland cows, a butterfly grove, or do coloring nights with education mixed throughout.

Another place to look at teaching life skills as an independent contractor or vendor is foster care homes, Section 8 housing programs, housing authority offices, prisons, and juvenile hall/probation programs that offer life skills and parenting programming.

Kulotta can also search open RFPs in their community to apply for as a nonprofit if they choose to establish one to fill unmet needs, or by partnering with other local nonprofits or government agencies who want to write a proposal together to provide services. RFPs are when grant funding or government funding is available and organizations are seeking proposals to fill a need.

Literacy/ Reading

Kulotta loves books and reading but has also struggled with dyslexia, so is experienced with finding workarounds that work for all learning types.

A few ideas are for Kulotta to find local organizations in the community currently teaching literacy and see if they are in need of tutors, or to apply for grant funding through an RFP to teach literacy or hire people to teach literacy.

Libraries, churches, adult schools, juvenile halls, and prisons all offer literacy programs. Here are some examples of grants for literacy in Florida.

There are also a lot of innovative models being used to teach literacy in low-income communities. For example, by partnering with workforce development boards and large employers, some communities have found ways to teach literacy in conjunction with employment so workers are paid to take classes during work time.

Here is an example. This may be a place Kulotta wants to research, either as a partner or for inspiration to build something similar.

Special Education Service Providers

Kulotta used to work in special education and school counseling, so she can start looking at companies that school districts and charter schools use to outsource assessments remotely.

This is happening more often as school districts are overwhelmed and understaffed, so they refer out services like disability testing or specialized IEP support.

Kulotta can spend time familiarizing herself with providers that offer remote opportunities. If she does not want direct counseling or teaching, she can focus on administrative support or testing.

Kulotta can also look at getting certified in tools like Myers-Briggs in order to train others, administer assessments, interpret results, and support college and career planning.

Remote Job

High School and College Admissions

Many families hire personal consultants to help with high school and college admissions. Kulotta can specialize in working with homeschool families or students with special needs.

She can work independently and advertise on Facebook college boards, or work for agencies that provide these services.

There is also a huge need for people to help families abroad apply to high school and college in the U.S. Many Christian schools recruit international students, and some have 30–50% of their student population as international students, as they pay higher tuition, which helps keep costs lower for local students and fund scholarships.

Kulotta can become a guardian and serve as a liaison between international families and schools, helping with everything from visas to host families to enrollment. While students are here, she can help with medical, school, and general support needs.

She could also check local Christian high schools to see if they have students needing placements for summer or the school year. Many schools pay $1,000–$3,000 a month to host exchange students, which includes housing, meals, transportation, and support. Many families host two students at a time.

Once a year, Kulotta can also apply to universities to be an admissions reader. The pay is not high and the workload is heavy, but it can be a meaningful side opportunity.

Retreats, Co-Ops, Conventions, Classes

Kulotta can use her love of helping parents, sharing resources, researching, and organizing to host retreats, co-ops, or conventions for homeschooling families, special needs families, moms, school counselors, or special education teachers.

She does not even have to teach, she can organize and facilitate.

For example:

• Ranch co-op days where kids learn life skills with Highland cows

• Butterfly garden field trips with coloring contests and Bible study

• Dyslexia reading conferences with multiple speakers

• Book clubs or Bible studies for kids or parents

• Homeschool campouts where families teach each other skills

• Coloring nights for moms with guest speakers

• Homeschool conferences with vendors and presentations

Kulotta can charge a small fee for organizing and grow these over time. She can offer them independently or through City Parks and Recreation or community education programs through colleges, which often provide space, insurance, and advertising in exchange for a percentage of enrollment.

Here is an example of how to pitch ideas to Parks and Recreation instructor programs via city government in Florida. If Kulotta offers workshops online, she can often teach for multiple departments at once, or travel between cities. Classes can be ongoing or one-time.

Kulotta might also consider teaching on Outschool or similar platforms.

She could also start a homeschool group through her church with a small fee, or be hired to run summer programs or VBS planning.

Coloring and Curriculum and Graphic Art

Kulotta can use AI to generate her own coloring books featuring butterflies, Highland cows, Bible verses, and more to create Amazon downloads or printed products, or sell on Teachers Pay Teachers.

She can also create religious curriculum, Bible studies, or Vacation Bible School materials, or work remotely for Christian curriculum companies to make materials more inclusive of different learning styles and special needs.

Hobby Lobby is also a Christian company with many butterfly, Highland cow, and faith-based products. Kulotta could explore design work or collaborate with artists to develop products.

She can also research Christian bookstores to see what curriculum companies they carry and what job opportunities exist.

Facebook now has monetization programs that don’t rely only on follower count but also engagement and watch time. Kulotta could create parenting content, life skills videos, or Bible studies for kids and parents.

Many creators also livestream coloring sessions, where audiences vote on colors or pages and send gifts that translate into income. Communities are built around daily coloring sessions, and many creators earn full-time income this way.

Purses

Kulotta also loves purses and could look at purchasing them wholesale and selling them on platforms like Whatnot, or even buying used places at estate sales, Goodwill bins, yard sales, etc. and flipping them for profit on marketplace, ebay, whatnot, vinted, mercari, poshmart, etc. There are also authentication companies that Kulotta could work for verifying the authenticity of purses or getting trained in authentication and then offering auctioneering services and authentication services to high end estates. Kulotta could also apply for a job at a purse company, work with an artist to design color your own purses and find a manufacture, or go back to school for a degree in accessory design which could allow them to specialize in handbags. Kulotta could design their own line of butterfly, highland cow, or Christian themed bags, or even purses to carry bibles. Kulotta could look at brands currently sold at a large Christian Bookstore and even see if they accept designs on their website.

Many Familes toured college campuses last week or this week while on spring break and now the panic has set in, high school Facebook groups are flooded with parents asking how do we make a plan for summer to :

And then you have me over hear saying wait….stop.🛑

Spend the summer getting career exposure to figure out what you want to buy. You realize that right? You are buying time with professors to build resume skills to get a job. A job that if you don’t know it exists you cannot get.

Take a five minute listen to this before diving off the over schedule summer deep-end to consider why ranking may mot matter as much as you think. I only made two podcasts before I realized it wasnt my medium but it’s a good listen I promise.

When I used to work a lot with middle school students, especially in low income areas they dreamed of playing professional sports. Did you know the reality of a high school senior getting recruited to play division one football is only 2.5% and the odds of getting a full ride division one scholarship for football is about .8%.

That said, I still think students can try, but they shouldn’t put all their eggs in one basket and students that are offered spots on teams at any level without a lot of financial assistance should always question if they would go to that school even if they were not given the opportunity to play because sometimes private schools in particular will offer students the opportunity to play without much financial compensation. 

Families will get excited that their student was recruited (for example at a D3 school when in reality the student may have also been able to play at a cheaper school or ine that was even a better fit major wise, but didn’t even apply there).

Regardless college can be a time to explore more unique sports that a student may love, but didn’t know opportunities beyond their hobby existed at the college level and surprisingly some of these even come with scholarships or at least the opportunity to travel and represent the university nationwide.

Do your own research about the recruitment process, If it’s just walk on or club and if any scholarship funds are available. A few of the sports may also be Olympic pipeline schools or even through club teams, students will meet people in the sport and potentially be able to get sponsors or go pro, coach, or work in the industry doing marketing, sales, product development, event management, referring, etc.

* teams come and go as do scholarships and clubs so I decided not to break these out by who offers scholarships, which ones are collegiate and which ones are club so be sure to check with the athletic department often about the status of a program.

Welcome to Make-a-Me: a collaboration with Career Vision by Jamie and Artist Cookiyy.

The Painting Pangolin loves Painting, Furniture, Nature, and tabletop miniatures used for games like Warhammer. Here are some ideas for The Painting Pangolin to checkout in their home state of North Carolina as they think about transitioning away from traditional teaching in a public school setting whwre they teach art.

Corporate Offices for Furniture Manufacturing Companies: North Carolina is the American hub of furniture manufacturing and with the current tariffs on furniture imports it has raised the cost of furniture made overseas from popular places like IKEA so it’s an in demand industry here in the US. North Carolina is home to the following furniture manufactures. Ashley Furniture Industries, Century Furniture, Bernhardt Furniture Company, Kincaid Furniture, and Thayer Coggin to name a few. The Painted Pangolin could visit their websites, book mark it, visit weekly, and if they don’t have jobs listed call and find out where they do advertise or if they use an agency for hiring. Once they know how they hire they should read every job posted as many job titles will be called things unfamiliar to most people. If a job sounds interesting, what skills are needed and how could the Painted Pangolin acquire them to eventually apply. Some skills can be learned in a day, a weekend, a month, or by going back to school for a certificate or degree. A few for the Painting Pangolin to check out given they have a degree in art could be graphic design, marketing, product development, store interior design, display merchandising, fabric design, or hand painting finishing. From making social media posts with paintings of furniture sold by the company to advertise new ascetic pieces to creating hand painted one of a kind details for a window display or on a dresser, you may be surprised at what the Painted Pangolin could find at some of these manufactures. In addition to furniture companies, I also suggest the Painted Pangolin look at jobs at any company they love and follow as they never know when they will see an artistic job show up.

Furniture Craftsmanship: Haywood Community College, Catawba Valley Community College, and Pitt Community College all offer training in fine craftsmanship, manufacturing, and furniture making. Caldwell community college also has a furniture upholstery program. North Carolina Furniture School offers short and lone term classes in wood craftsmanship for furniture, including restoration and design work. Whether the Painted Pangolin picks it up as a hobby, gig, side hustle, or full time work, they can also customize the furniture into unique artistic pieces featuring their art work or even mixing it with things like Warhammer and nature themed pieces. Whether they work for themself, a company mentioned above, or go to work for historical restoration companies or museums, like Mumford Restoration or High Point Museum, their love of furniture can also be explored using makerspaces that have lots of free or low cost access to high end equipment in a community space. Fablab Noda and NCCU Fablab are two in state worth looking at as access to good equipment speeds up and professionalizes the process.

Toy Design: While the Painted Pangolin may be just playing around with friends painting Warhammer Miniatures, toy design is a real thing. While not in North Carolina the Painted Pangolin can look at classes at places like Otis, SCAD, and FIT to see what skills are taught for tou deign and maybe find other ways to learn them. The Painted Pangolin can take the love of furniture small and make dollhouse furniture and accessories for 18” dolls, Barbie sized dolls, or even miniature doll houses. They can learn 3D printing (again makerspaces are a great resource) and even design their own custom table too game pieces, including the Painted Pangolin! How cute would that be….hmmmm maybe Cookiyy and I need to look into that and get a 3D printer. Lionel Trains is located in North Carolina. Most of the pieces are now mass produced over seas but used to be hand painted. Could still be interesting to see what jobs they may have. Tryon Toys is also in North Carolina and does seem to be hand painted still. Dolls and Designs by Sandi is also in North Carolina and hand paints dolls. If The Painted Pangolin was open to moving, Games Workshop Group is in England and makes Warhammer Minatures. The Painted Pangolin could also have kids deaign their own figurine, doll, furniture piece, etc and paint it for them. Many high schools partner with elementary schools and have the younger kids make drawings that the older kids turn into ceramic figurines or 3D printed toys. Kids have the best imagination, and parents love getting their art turned 3D to give as a gift.

Art Instruction

While the Painting Pangolin may decide to stay in public school teaching full time, there are a lot of other options to teach. Determining the age and level of instruction as well as frequency is really important. Teaching via parks and recreation as a contracted instructor can allow the Painting Pangolin to experiment with being an entrepreneur while allowing the city to do the heavy lifting of advertising, collecting payment, booking a space, and covering insurance so the Painting Pangolin can focus on just teaching. many instructors have also redefined teaching to be facilitating meaning they just create the time and space and facilitate the art process. An example of this is paint and sips. The facilitator gets to paint while others follow along. This can be recreated for adults, children, the elderly, the disabled, anyone…..and the facilitator doesn’t even have to be great, it’s all about a fun experience. Libraries, restaurants, bars, ice cream shops, baby showers, weddings, birthday parties, home achool groups, retirement homes, camp grounds, resorts, cruise ships are all great places to host an event like this. The Painting Pangolin also has an interest in living in the country so could barter their way across the state, us, or world bartering painting events at bed and breakfasts, inns, retreats, hostels, etc via websites like workaway.info or start their own by renting or buying a large home, piece of land with tents or cabins, and holding on site painting retreats. Even telling people to bring a piece of furniture or a miniatures figure to paint could be a fun workshop to facilitate where the Painted Pangolin helps people learn to do miniatures or customize furniture with a design everyone tries. Maybe the Painting Pangolin can even work a summer arts camp and be the resident art instructor and see if they want to create something similar. Teaching minus the rules, grades, public school system can be just the change of pace the Painting Pangolin may need.

Sign Making

Many people don’t know that places like Trader Joe’s hire artists to make signs and paint murals in store year round. Wonder if the Painting Pangolin has paid attention while in store? I have seen job postings ranging from $60k to $120k. The 120k was in North Carolina. Mistake? I don’t know. More and more places are moving to artist created marketing. If Trader Joe’s isn’t thr vibe, can the Painting Pangolin look around town to see if windows need painting, signs need refurbishing, and murals need painting? Many cities have grants to integrate art into downtowns and commonly pay $500-$5000 for artists to paint utility boxes, storm drains, crosswalks, vacant buildings, etc.

Tattoos

The Painted Pangolin use to do tattoos but their license has expired. They could renew this and specialize in furniture tattoos for example, or if they don’t want to renew their license learn face painting or henna tattoos which are two services they can offer at events for extra income. They could also take the idea of tattoos and move it to a new surface. Like tattooing furniture, shoes, water bottles via etching and engraving.

Art Therapy

As a way to explore a variety of art mediums and help people in the process The Painted Pangolin may look at Art Therapy. Mars Hill University in North Carolina may have a bachelors but since The Painted Pangolin already has a degree in art, looking for a masters in art therpy at the American Association of Art Therapists out of state may make more sense as I don’t quickly see one in state. Art therapists work in children’s hospitals, prisons, retirement homes, nursing homes, private practice, schools, domestic violence shelters, retreat centers, etc. Art could even be done outside in nature at an art retreat center. Very large corporate companies even offer free art classes on site as a way to destress and boost creativity during lunch. These kinds of jobs would be housed under Corporate Wellness.

Special Fx

The Painted Pangolin may like to check out places like Stan Winston Online and see how they can take their painting skills to the next level with special effects. From painting actors to monsters to animatronics to props this industry continues to grow with movies, theme parks, and themed experiences. For example Ampa Events is just one place in North Carolina to check out that hires artists. I see some jobs starting at $50k on there. Learning to do set deaign and theater props is another great skill to open more doors. If the Painted Pangolion wants to stay in North Carolina there may be fewer opportunities but across the US there are lots of options.

Collectibles

Vaillanvourt Folk Art, Department 56, Pickard China, Iron Studios, and Pure Arts are just some companies in the US that make hand painted collectibles including Christmas ornaments, china, and gaming figurines. A browse on ther website and watching jobs could be interesting, even if not located in North Carolina. Maybe they allow artists to paint from home or offer some other remote work situations.

Bonus

The painted Pangolin mentioned wanting a job other than traditional art teacher at a school and was often exhausted at wnd of the day and didnt want to bring work home so they could still enjoy art of their own after hours, so even considered being a pilot or dental assistant. This is common with artists but I hope some of the ideas above can help the Painted Pangolion redefine their interests. Before leaving main interest areas I would suggest looking at more ideas with…

Interested in Space and Health? There are new emerging fields popping up all over at Universities as space exploration increases especially in the commercial sector. Could you imagine one day even doing a medical residency in space? What about engineering new medical equipment for space stations or facilities in space? When you choose a robotics degeee look to see what they are working on and studying. you could get into top schools but be working on machines to milk cows, jump start hearts, build more efficient machines for building cars, or doing navigation for food delivery bots. A lot of students don’t want to work on robotics that replace human jobs like delivering food only enhance them in ways humans can’t do a job or do dangerous jobs.

If you are interested in robotics and delivery systems though I have put together a list of companies making delivery robots on ground and by air so you can see what they require and where they are located so you can plan ahead to get skills you need to work there. In this case more work with navigation and perception than the actual engineering of the bot is needed as this is the second crash in Chicago this week. Also many college campuses have these and are test grounds to work out bugs so if you want to get into this field choosing a campus where they are deployed can lead to potential work on campus managing them. I know cal poly slo by me has some can’t recall what brand. I will go catch them in action ine day for fun. friendly reminder….I talk about all jobs ….I am not promoting replacing human jobs but I also see great use for things like this in other ways.

Some of you may still be comparing college acceptance offers and it’s hard to choose so here are 6 tips to help you narrow your choices. Normally I focus on majors, professor research, local industry/ employers, and cost but assuming you have read my other posts, and if not I will link them below, here are 6 more things to consider.

1. Do they offer National Student Exchange?

This program allows you to essentially use your college like a timeshare and swap a semester elsewhere for the same price. Visit my explanation about NSE here.

2. Have you checked out the commute?

By commute I mean walking, biking, scooting, skating, busing, ubering, etc from your residence hall to the dinning hall, to your main academic building, to the rec center, to the grocery store, to the town, to recreate, to the bus stop, to the airport, etc. If not and you can visit, do. If you can’t, start mapping it all out. Also what is parking like or feee for having a car on campus if you are taking a car. I know this idea of “commuting” is one of the biggest complaints of students at many of the universities I have been to, worked at, or lived near. While it may not seem like a big deal, it can become one when you are tired, cold, hot, sick, alone, rushed, carrying heavy things, etc. It can mean the difference between eating and not eating, going to class or not, recreating/ socializing or staying in, etc.

3. Have you visited in all weather conditions?

I hear so may students talking about wanting a change but sometimes too drastic of a change can mean not making it the first year and coming home. Weather that is too hot, too cold, too wet, too humid, too windy, etc can really impact every aspect of our academic, mental, emotional, and physical health. Don’t skip this analysis especially if you are going from one extreme to another.

4. Who comes to the career fair?

If you have never looked at who attends the career fair, it is worth a browse ad it may help show local industry, connections, and opportunities both during and after graduation. Looking over the career center website, resources, events, etc is important in general, campuses who invest in the career center have graduates who are better prepared to enter the workforce than those who see it as more of a perk or bonus add on. Career services should be at the forefront of your education working with employers and you all four years not once you graduate.

5. Have you browsed the campus rule book?

Some campuses have coed showers, dorms, and restrooms, others allow concealed weapons. Some make you live on campus the first 2 years and other require all 4. Some allow pets in dorms others make you do a semester abroad.

Here are a few ideas teens can pour their time and energy into that make big impacts in the community, teach resume skills for future jobs, allow them to be exposed to various careers, and also clock community service hours but in a meaningful way.

Host a Blood Drive on Campus

The American Red Cross has a tool kit that can help teens organize a blood drive on campus. Not only does this expose them to the world of blood banks which many students never think about as a career path with hosts of jobs from drivers to phlebotomists to quality assurance technicians to logistical coordinators, to lab managers to fundraisers to marketing and graphic design teams and event coordinators, but it helps them tangibly make an impact in their community.

Organize a No Kings Day Event

Whether you want to host a sign making event, a poetry slam, silent chalk art mural event, stand on a bridge with banners, or organize a large city wide protest, there is something for everyone. A lot of times parents worry about their teens participating in a protest, rightfully so, but there are small ways teens can do big things that are less “protest” like and still impactful. Even virtually from home, teens can help make social media posts or spread the word and never actually attend or be intention and gather a small group of friends to share music and food and talk about their feelings and make a video to share. The event is in 6 days so if interested act fast or get on mailing lists for future opportunities.
